Dr. Charles Townes, recipient of Special Recognition Award at ASLMS Meeting

Last week we attended the ASLMS (American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery) meeting in Phoenix. One of the highlights of the meeting, besides celebrating the 50th anniversary of the operation of the laser, was the Special Recognition Award given to Dr. Charles Townes, an American Nobel Prize-winning physicist and educator. We were excited to see this award presented, as Townes is known worldwide as the “Father of Lasers,” having developed laser technology to the benefit of millions, both in military and medical uses.

Townes, born in 1915 in South Carolina, graduated summa cum laude from Furman University at the tender age of 19. He completed a master’s degree in physics at Duke and a PhD from Cal Tech with a thesis about isotope separation and nuclear spins. Keep in mind that this was back in 1939, when these technologies were in their infancy. As an early member of the Bell Telephone Laboratories, his work in radar bombing systems and microwave technology, which led to his appointment to the faculty at Columbia University, led to uses of ammonia gas in masers (microwave amplification through radiation), which ultimately produced laser technologies. He and his research assistants were the first to detect complex molecules in the galaxy, as well as the measurement of the mass in the black hole in our galaxy’s center. With the assistance of Arthur Schawlow, he wrote Microwave Spectroscopy, which was published in 1955. During his tenure at Bell Labs, Dr. Townes was asked to help with the development of a radar system for WWII aircraft. Although Dr. Townes did not serve in the military, he and his team contributed to the war efforts by creating more accurate and precise radar systems, though none of them were ever mass-produced by the military. Some of the new systems developed were used as prototypes in the early B-52 bombers.

Dr. Townes went on to become the VP and Director of Research for Washington DC-based Institute for Defense Analyses, a nonprofit group that advised the government. After 2 years in that position, he became Provost and Professor of Physics at MIT, specializing in research of quantum electronics and astronomy. In 1967, he became a professor at University of California, on the Berkeley campus.

Zeltiq and Photodynamic Therapy star at AAD meeting

Dr. Pozner and I have just returned from the 67th annual American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) meeting in San Francisco and what a meeting it was. Over 18,000 people attended the meeting that dealt with all aspects of dermatology. It should come as no surprise that among the most exciting aspects of the meeting was the ever changing world of cosmetic dermatology.

Fat removal and body contouring are exciting new topics as is the evolving world of photodynamic therapy. Cryolipolysis by Zeltiq continues to show enormous interest. This totally non-invasive method of melting fat is currently undergoing FDA trials, but has just received regulatory approval in Europe, as Dr. Pozner reported below this post. Presentations showed remarkable melting of love handles simply by selectively applying “cold” to the areas of fat. This approach added to other future methods of non-invasive body contouring by UltraShape and Liposonix (now owned by Medicis the company that sells the Restylane wrinkle filer) only add to the excitement.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) also was another exciting area of discussion. This approach of applying a medication to the skin that is then activated by a laser or light source has been used for years to treat pre-skin cancers. More recently the technique has been shown to promote better skin quality and lead to improvement in acne. What is most exciting was the suggestion that newer PDT approaches currently being studied may ultimately lead to a cure for acne and better ways to remove unwanted hair. Stay tuned!

Guest Blog: Dr. Diane Duncan on RFAL assisted liposuction

I just returned from the inaugural Brazilian-American meeting of plastic surgeons held last week by the ASAPS and ISAPS in beautiful Park City, Utah. The meeting was fantastic and melded some terrific techniques and presentation from both Brazilian and American physicians. This meeting was the brainchild of Renato Saltz, MD, an internationally respected plastic surgeon in Salt Lake City by way of Brazil.



One of the best presentations was by Diane Duncan, MD(pictured above), a leading plastic surgeon from Colorado who presented her data on Invasix, with whom she's been doing clinical trials for their RF liposuction/skin retraction device. On their website, it is billed as the first "RFAL," or Radio Frequency Assisted Liposuction device. What follows is a guest post by Dr. Duncan:

"One of the most exciting new technologies we have come across is made by a new Israeli company Invasix. Their device is a radiofrequency modulated liposuction and skin retraction device, currently being reviewed by the FDA for approval.

I have been doing some phase III clinical trials. This device is used internally during liposuction and caused unidirectional heating of the skin. The heating is more uniform than can be achieved with laser liposuction and quicker. The device also can control the amount of skin heating by decreasing energy when the skin achieves the correct temperature. This machine seems to offer a real advantage in obtaining localized skin surface area reduction without skin excision.

Many patients that we would have previously treated with an abdominoplasty may achieve excellent results with radiofrequency assisted liposuction alone. The next study will be a split abdomen study, comparing traditional liposuction to the radiofrequency modality. A 3-D CAD system will be used to measure both volumetric and skin surface area changes."
